Beauty is socially constructed

Hello and welcome to the first episode of the diyqueen talks series ! Today i'm going to talk about how beauty is socially constructed .....

What do you think when you hear the word ‘beautiful’? Most of you would probably think according to generalized society’s point of view: supermodel gorgeous, thin, tall and perfect – all the stuff you personally see in magazines. Is beauty socially constructed? If so, how do we stop it?
A lot women do things like style their hair and wear makeup because that act makes them “feminine” – but I am fed-up of hearing that. What you choose to do with your body and life has nothing to do with who you really are. Can you not style your hair and not wear makeup and still be feminine? Yes, you can! Only wear a smile on face, glad expression and respectful clothes and that’s it you’re ready to go! We nowadays think these are normal thing to do but think again, is that who women really are?

Girls are brainwashed at a very young age that Barbie is how a woman is supposed to look and live like, which young girls often strive to obtain – and that could be life-threating.  Barbie portrays the perfect image and life. Not only is Barbie tall, skinny and perfect, she has all the luxurious accessories to match her perfect life. To go along with her perfect life she is accompanied with the perfect family and dream house. These life and body ideals are reinforced every day on TV shows and movies, magazines, and more. We mutilate the natural state of our bodies in order to be deemed acceptable.
Being a teenager, I feel that we live in a culture where being thin is the only normal thing. I feel this way because throughout my school journey the girls “with meat in them” were often bullied. Low self-esteem and eating disorders would then result from these feelings. I, personally, do not think that "only thin is beautiful" or “only chubby is beautiful. Not only by your exterior, but what kind of a person you are and what you have inside, makes you beautiful.

In my opinion, I think you should do whatever you feel like doing! Don’t do things simply because that is what “a girl is supposed to do”! Challenge gender roles. If you go along with these unacceptable and unattainable beauty and life standards, it will just keep growing worse and worse! So, don’t let these little things society does manipulate your mind! Women are beautiful, women should feel beautiful. All of us.
